bobwhite quail flushed like wild birds! These birds were
hatched using Dale Davis "Quail Program." With
over 40 years of experience, Dale continues to breed and
train field trial Champions and for the foot hunting sportsmen.
His bird dogs are developed using wild birds and with his
revolutionary method of using recall bobwhite quail that
successfully developed wild bird populations. Dale's understanding
of bobwhite behavior, bird husbandry and habitat requirements
enabled him to have bobwhite quail population in which to
train outstanding bird dogs. Please visit Dale's web site
to learn more about this outstanding Quail
Program Video. |
| Dale's Quail Program starts by obtaining bobwhite quail
eggs from a local source. Proper incubation of eggs insure
a high success rate of hatching. The one day old chicks
are kept in a brooder with food, water and a heating lamp. |
| Bobwhite quail in the recall pen. These quail are feeding
and generally very calm and relaxed. The sized of the
recall pen must be large enough for birds to fly and run
about the pen. Note; there are two birds outside the recall
pen as well as a water source. Predators may take some
birds, however, birds quickly learn to avoid them as the
bobwhites are strong flyers and have survival instincts
that keeps them wary. Young bird dog pups are allowed
to interact with these young birds. Initially, the pups
learn to detect birds by sight, scent and with excitement
and enthusiasm give chase as the birds are pressured.
With experience the pups learn to creep and finally point
birds hidden in cover. Thus, both pups and birds learn
from each other; pups learn how to handle bobwhites, while
the birds learn to escape from danger. |

| Wayne Bazen with Hank's Prairie Bandit after winning the
Canadian Amatuer Derby. Hank was trained using Dale's "Quail
Program" and on native wild birds. |
| At 6 weeks old, quail are strong enough to be placed in
a recall pen. Note; the floor covering, water and feed containers.
Proper care and attention to detail helps to ensure that
the bobwhites are in great health. These birds quickly adopt
to the recall pen as their new home. Limit your exposure
to the birds so they do not habituate to humans. |
| Young pups interact with released bobwhites and learned
to handle birds during their formative years. One pup points
a quail while the other "backs" naturally. |
| A released bobwhite hen finds the recall tunnel to enter
the recall pen. Quail are very smart and quickly find the
tunnels to reenter the pen. Food and water are always available
in the recall pen. |
